Spring decorating ideas – refreshing your lounge

It can happen to us all – no matter how much you like your home, after a while there usually comes a time when it might seem a little tired and in need of a lift. Spring is traditionally the time for giving the home that facelift.

It’s not always possible to stretch to a new look for the whole home so if you’ve decided that your lounge is going to get the springtime special treatment then I’m here to help.

A new colour scheme is the most obvious starting point and doesn’t have to be as time consuming or as much hard work as you might think. Painting walls doesn’t actually take that long and your room could have a new look in a matter of hours. Fortunately there’s no need to paint the whole room, thanks to our friend the ‘feature wall’, all you need to do is pick a wall and paint it in a contrasting colour or shade to the rest of the room et voila.

Another way to create some ‘pow’ with a feature wall? Get yourself some bold wallpaper that compliments your existing colour scheme and get to pasting.

New window dressings are another great way to give a room a new look. If you’ve had some (very necessary) heavy winter curtains up, then how about a lighter option, like blinds – Roman, Venetian or roller? Or, for a touch of character, consider plantation shutters, which have become so popular over recent years and look great in neutral schemes.

Buying new furniture can be a major investment and sometimes replacing all the pieces in a room can be out of financial reach. But, don’t be put off altogether – get an accent chair to add to your lounge that will create a focal point in the room.

Keep your palette in mind when choosing your new piece, especially if you’ve introduced a different colour with a feature wall. Throw a cushion in a contrasting colour onto your chair and make it really stand out. Remember all your furniture doesn’t have to match (unless of course you prefer that look), one standalone piece that’s different to your sofa set can really set off your room.

Other economical ways to make an impact in a room?

  • Adding artwork to the walls is quick and easy. Enlarged photos, prints, original pieces – go nuts. If you already have pieces you’re happy with, then what about adding or upgrading your frames?
  • Changing or adding a simple feature, like a lamp, can make a real difference to the atmosphere of a room, something with height or exquisitely shaped = beautiful and useful!
  • Cushions – if you’ve got some, get some more, different colours, shapes and sizes, they make a big but affordable difference.

So those are just a few spring decorating ideas for your lounge to get you off the starting blocks. Will you be making any changes to your lounge to usher in the season?
